Harry was the rich kid in the "gang", being the only son
of the rich and powerful Norman Osborn, owner of a leading chemical
manufacturer. He has always been somewhat of a "disgrace" to his father
though, as Norman felt that his son had no backbone. He just wanted the
affections of his father, and wanted him to be proud of him. Easier said
than done though, as it got even harder as Norman took the guise of the
Green Goblin. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree though, as Harry
eventually replaced his father as the Green Goblin, when his father was
thought dead for a very long time.

Harry made his very first appearance in the very important Amazing Spider-Man #31, where he was seen as somewhat of a snobby rich college kid. He still got along well with his classmates, but at first had a big disliking to Peter Parker. Harry got Peter into trouble at times, thinking that Peter was "stuck-up", when in fact Peter was too busy worrying about his many problems as Spider-Man, and at home with his often ill Aunt May. It wasn't till Peter saw the problems that Harry had trying to gain the attention of his father, that the two bonded. Harry, too, became detached from the crowd with his problems. Similar to that of Peter. |
| Harry eventually asked Peter to become his roommate in a nice college apartment, and within a short period of time, Peter accepted. This did not create a comfortable feeling between Peter and his sometimes amnesiac father, who as the Green Goblin, knew Peter's alter ego. At first, Harry did not know that his father was driven insane by a chemical accident, turning him into the Green Goblin. Harry began dating Mary Jane Watson, but it wasn't exactly a great match. MJ didn't like being attached to just one man, and there was trouble for Harry in the form of taking illegal drugs to escape the pressures of his life. See Amazing Spider-Man #96-98 for this story. |

When Harry's father "died" in Amazing Spider-Man #122, He removed the Green Goblin costume from his body, as to hide the fact that Norman was the Goblin. Harry gradually became mentally unstable at this point, blaming Spider-Man for his father's death. Then came Amazing Spider-Man #135, where Harry found Spider-Man's costume and mask in Peter's dresser. He finally discovered that Peter has been Spider-Man all this time! This news drove Harry over the top, and all the stress and drugs have driven him insane. He assumed the identity of the Green Goblin in Amazing Spider-Man #136, but was defeated by Spider-Man. At left: Amazing Spider-Man #260. |
| Harry became the new owner and president of Osborn chemical and married an old friend of Peter's Liz Allan. They had a son together named after Harry's father: Normy Osborn. Harry became the Goblin relatively few times, as his memories of him being the Goblin were repressed. Sometimes, the memories would re-emerge, battling the Green Goblin III (his psychiatrist Bart Hamilton) & the Hobgoblin, and it wasn't until Spectacular Spider-Man #200 where the memories emerged for a last time. Harry died at the side of his best friend Peter (as Spider-Man). He died due to an experimental Goblin formula being too toxic, and it killed him from within. Will he come back??? |
