The first love of Peter Parker can very well be seen as the secretary of the Daily Bugle Betty Brant. The two were definitely attracted to each other early on in the pages Amazing Spider-Man, but Betty and Peter never really hit it off. There were good reasons for this as Peter never really could divulge the secret of him being Spider-Man to her. Betty always thought that Peter was keeping something from her, and she eventually began a long courtship with Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds. Here is her story:

Betty dropped-out of High School in Philadelphia to become the administrative secretary of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. It was a job that her mother held before her. She eventually met photographer Peter Parker and the two began to fall in love. The two became very close, especially after an attack on the offices of the Daily Bugle in Amazing Spider-Man #7 by the Vulture. They shared some together under a desk in the office to cover themselves from the attack. Peter had a hard time deciding whether or not to tell her his secret that he was Spider-Man, but the decision became much more easy to make after the events of Amazing Spider-Man #11 & 12.

As told in Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #12, Betty's brother Bennett became friendly with Betty's then boyfriend named Gordon. Gordon was into many illegal activities and Bennett eventually took on a gambling debt that he couldn't pay back to a gangster named Blackie Gaxton. Blackie's thugs came looking for Bennett at their home, and Betty's mother got "in the way" and knocked violently into a coffee table, resulting in permanent brain damage. On top of that, Bennett was fatally shot in Amazing Spider-Man #11 when he got into a battle between Spider-Man and Gaxton's gang. Betty had to take the secretary job at the Bugle in order to pay the medical bills for her mother.

Betty now hated Spider-Man and blamed him for the death of her brother. There was no chance of Peter telling her his secret now. Ever since their first date in Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #3, it looked like the two were made for each other, but Betty moved on and eventually met and fell in love with Daily Bugle reporter Ned Leeds. Ned first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #17 by face only. He was introduced as Ned Leeds in Amazing Spider-Man #18, his first "true" appearance. At first, Peter didn't care much for Ned, but it didn't matter much as Ned and Betty had  very long engagement. The two were finally married in Amazing Spider-Man #156.

The marriage was not exactly a good one. Ned and Betty later separated and Betty went to Peter for support, as Ned was consumed with his work and his behaivor began to change. As told in Hobgoblin Lives #1-3, it was first thought that he was the alter ego of the Hobgoblin, but it was finally discovered that he was framed and then assassinated in Germany. Betty became an investigative reporter in Web Of Spider-Man #91, and began to see other men. She began to see long time supporting character Eugene "Flash" Thompson at a time when he himself was having a troubles. She has also dated for a brief time, Ben Reilly, the clone of Peter Parker, but that too didn't last long.
