The secrets of Betty Brant! What secrets can J. Jonah Jameson's secretary possibly have? We know that she first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #4 and was a major part of the storyline that ran in Amazing Spider-Man #11 & 12, but not many seemed evident. The story begins as Betty is having a dream of an evil Spider-Man taking hold of Peter. Betty pleads to let him go then the man unmasks himself revealing himself to be Gordon. Gordon who? well read on! This issue deals with alot of back-story and issues leading into the events of Amazing Spider-Man #11 concerning such characters as Blackie Gaxton and Betty's brother Bennett who died in that issue.

While on her way to work the next morning, Betty says good-bye to her mother and a nurse that is taking care of her. On the streets, the Vulture and Spider-Man are battling in the sky. Spider-Man states that he has defeated him three times already and that he will defeat him again. Amazing Spider-Man #2 & 7 plus Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #5 were the previous three battles by the way in chronological order. Betty at this point recalls telling Peter that she left High School and took a job and that he reminded her of someone that she once knew. Could this be Gordon? Maybe! Anyway, she thinks of days past when she was in school and her mother was working as Jameson's secretary. Then there was Gordon, yes THAT Gordon! He was attending Empire State University and Betty and her brother Bennett all got along great. It was slowly learned that Gordon had a reckless side to him including driving fast & gambling. It was Gordon that got Bennett Brant (remember Amazing Spider-Man #11 ?) into gambling and eventually his problems with it. At one point Bennett lost it all and Gordon informed him that a man named Blackie Gaxton (Amazing Spider-Man #11 again!) wanted payment now! It seemed that Bennett alone signed the IOU's and Gordon just left him. Betty breaks free from her little daydream reminiscing and finds herself in the Daily Bugle office.

In another of Betty's flashback's, she remembers when Blackie's men went to the Brant household to "speak" with Bennett. His mother got in the way and was pummeled into a coffee table which resulted in permanent brain damage. The two siblings talk about what they are going to do about the debt that Bennett owes Gaxton since Bennett does not want to "work" for him. You all know the rest if you have read Amazing Spider-Man #11. Betty is rudely awoken from her flashback by Jameson who informs that Spider-Man is in midtown battling the Scarlet Beetle. You may remember the Scarlet Beetle when he battled Ant-Man in Tales To Astonish #39. Spider-Man is joined by Bluebird who cuts into his concentration and the Scarlet Beetle whacks him good. Betty, back at the Bugle, has yet another flashback. She remembers how her mother's hospital bills were so high so she just "took" the job that her mother had being Jameson's
executive secretary. She did what she had to do with all her problems with Bennett and her mother's health. Spidey and Bluebird, at the same moment Betty's most recent flashback ends, struggle with the Scarlet Beetle. They remember how Ant-Man defeated him and use an ether-egg to shrink the giant beetle.

Betty, back at the Bugle looks at a picture of Peter and it scares her because he doesn't know everything about her past and is afraid that it may scare him off. She cares for greatly though, but as history will tell us, it was not meant to be for these two. The two end up going out for a bite to eat. While out, a man in the shadows slowly appears, and in the last panel it turns out to be, you guessed it! Gordon!

One of the best issues of Untold Tales packed with historical events that lead up to Amazing Spider-Man #11. Gordon makes his next appearance in Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #15.
