In between Amazing Spider-Man #6 and #7 there lies an Untold Tale that was left untold for many years. Not until Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #2 did the story that introduced Batwing take place. Who or what is Batwing is quickly answered as the first couple of pages show a hideous flying creature attack a wealthy councilman in his backyard. We then cut to a young Peter Parker rushing to school the next day reading the headline: "Winged Menace Attacks Councilman" in that day's edition of the Daily Bugle. We also meet two of the fellow students in addition the the already established Flash Thompson and Liz Allan: Sally Avril and "Tiny" McKeever, who takes Peter's math notes. They both play larger roles as the series progresses.

After school, Peter looks for the creature after he changes into Spider-Man, then back as Peter when he arrives at the Daily Bugle building. Just like in last issue, Peter is just about to ask out secretary Betty Brant, but publisher J. Jonah Jameson lets out yet another holler to Peter when he asks for some new pics. No luck! Peter then visits the councilman as Spider-Man and states that he will capture the creature when the councilman replies: "It takes a freak to catch a freak!" Real nice huh? After that, Peter makes a sneaky little visit to Tiny McKeever's home and takes back his math notes by shooting a web through his window at his target. While in the window, Peter overhears Tiny getting reprimanded by his father concerning his falling grades that could make him lose his position on the school football team. Some loud sounds occur afterwards and at first Peter doesn't feel bad for Tiny as he was himself bullied by him, but things change.

Later that night Spider-Man attends the councilman's party given in his backyard unnoticed. The creature swoops down upon the many guests looking like a bat with long sharp claws. Armed men are ordered to shoot the creature until Spider-Man gets involved and webs their guns up, the he himself goes after the creature. The councilman is angered beyond reason for Spider-Man's involvement and orders a chopper to go after the creature. Spider-Man catches up to the creature and then rides him like a rodeo bull until he falls off. Again, Spider-Man catches up to the flying monster, and then he sees his face. He is shocked to learn that the flying bat-like creature is but a kid. The kid pleads with Spidey not to harm him and that all he wanted was food and meant to harm no one.

Wondering how a kid, no older than thirteen, can become this hideous monster, the child hands over a diary to Spider-Man. The diary tells of a story of a boy that goes on a business trip with his father to investigate chemical dumping in a cavern. His father got into trouble and was lost, leaving the boy behind to look for water and food. He drank the contaminated water to stay alive and within time, he was saved. Over time it was discovered that he sprouted wings and gradually turned into this creature. His mother called him a demon and he flew away to New York looking for food and places to hide.

Spider-Man is now feels nothing but compassion for the child and offers to help him, but the child is startled thinking that he will be taken to scientists to be cut up and begins to fly away until he is held up by guns from the councilman's armed guards. Spider-Man webs the men up and again offers to help the child, but it's too late. Batwing flies away to look for a new place to hide. The issue ends with Peter knocking on Tiny McKeever's home door offering to help him with his school work and Tiny accepts. Batwing appears next in Untold Tales Of Spider-Man #7.
