"Death Of A Goblin" - Part 4 |
Character Watch Rating - 6.0 |
|
Story
The "Death Of A Goblin" has been dragging along now for three
issues, and finally the wheels are beginning to get in motion. Remember, Norman
Osborn has escaped a super-prison located at the Triskelion, and has since told
his "story" to the world through various media outlets. Norman's "story"
concerns how he was illegally arrested and imprisoned by Nick Fury, and that his
son Harry was taken away from him for no reason. After viewing Norman's show on
television, Peter "moves" Peter Mary Jane and Aunt May to safety, then goes
after Norman himself. Unfortunately for Peter, SHIELD agents moved in on him,
and took him away and imprisoned him. The issue opens up with Peter's former
girlfriend Kitty Pryde discovering that Spider-Man has been taken away by
SHIELD, and decides to go and help him. When she arrives at the prison to save
him, a brief battle between her and Peter against SHIELD ensues. It comes to an
abrupt end however, when the two young super-heroes are asked to help SHIELD go
after Norman, who is now at Trump Tower. Everyone makes there way over to Trump
Tower, where Norman is demanding money from his accountant, and threatens to
kill him if he doesn't. Just as Norman transforms into the Green Goblin, bullets
begin to fly, and Spider-Man swings on in to land a kick in the Goblin's face.
The two arch enemies exchange blows for a couple pages, before cliffhanger
ending takes place. Cool "Zombie" variant cover also available.

Title:
"One More Day" Part 2 "The Other Side Of Darkness" |
Character Watch Rating - 7.5 |
|
Story
"One More Day" continues here with part two (Part One was
in Amazing Spider-Man #546) with another storyline that promises to
change everything in the "Spider-Verse". Aunt May is just about to kick the
bucket, and Peter is trying is he can possibly do to save her. Remember, it was
Peter who was the "main" target for a then-unknown assassin, who instead nailed
Aunt May through the chest. As Aunt May is being moved into a private hospital
room (courtesy of the financial help from Tony Stark), Peter refuses to accept
the fact this already very old woman is going to die. As Spider-Man, he swings
on over to the home of Doctor Strange for help. After a brief origin re-cap for
Strange's origin, Peter receives some advice from the Doctor, but it is not what
he wants to hear. Peter literally cries for help, but Doctor Strange is very
strict in his stance that there is nothing that he can do to help. Doc then
invokes a spell where Peter visits many places and times in an instant, to try
to go and find what he needs. We see a glimpse of Peter visiting Reed Richards
(Mister Fantastic), the Beast, the Black Panther, and even Morbius and Dr. Doom.
Again, Nothing. Peter is overwhelmed by the fact there is nothing he can do for
his aunt. While Strange is away getting a refreshment, Peter plays around with
the good doctor's "toys" a little too much, and then proceeds to gets himself in
trouble. Peter now finds himself back to the time and place of when the shooting
of his aunt originally took place, but he is not in a tangible form. Frustrated
that he cannot do a thing to change what took place, he tries in vain to reach
out to his aunt while the shooting takes place. Doc Strange brings Peter back to
the present, but Peter is in bad shape, and now needs "the elements" to restore
him. Doctor Strange tends to an unexpected visitor , but arrives back to Peter
shortly thereafter. The Doctor's last advice he gives to Peter is that he go be
with his aunt for her final moments. Down and out, Peter leaves Strange's home
thinking that "we all die" and "we cannot change that". The final page however,
looks to break those rules as a bird mysteriously transforms into a little girl
who looks like little red riding hood. All right in front of Peter. Let the
guessing game begin as to who this "little girl" really is. Some extra features
include a Mary Jane Watson profile, a five-page partial reprint from Amazing
Spider-Man #259, and some more sketchbook type pages that have been featured in
the "One More Day" Sketchbook previously. There is also a variant cover to this
issue by artist Marko Djurdevic. Part three is to be continued in Sensational
Spider-Man #41, which will also be $3.99, and also have a variant cover.

"I, Hobgoblin!" |
Character Watch |
|
Story
Spider-Girl's arch-foe, the Hobgoblin, is back, with plans to
eliminate Spider-Girl. He mistakenly believes Spider-Girl is working for the
Black Tarantula, the reigning kingpin of crime. To aid him, he tracks down an
almost-forgotten Spider-Man villain in Las Vegas and convinces him to help. Of
course, the Hobgoblin intends to double-cross his new partner when it is to his
advantage. In the previous issue, Mayday Parker's little brother Ben lost his
hearing during Spider-Girl's fight with Carnage. He still is deaf and Mayday
feels responsible and guilty. She's also under the false impression that her dad
blames her for what happened to Ben, when nothing could be farther from the
truth. Meanwhile, Mayday's best friend Davida wins the election for Student Body
President at Midtown High School.

Art
Solid as always, but kudos have to go out to
the fantastic cover this month. The "characters as chess pieces" cover has been
done before (most notably the 1961 cover to Justice League of America #1
by Mike Sekowsky), but this is a particularly nice take on that concept.
Best page: The splash page with the Hobgoblin
sitting high and mighty.

"Submerged" |
Character Watch Rating - 6.0 |
|
Story
Another new story opens at City Hall in New York City,
where a protest is being held concerning global warning, led by Senator Alvin
Arnold. Daily Bugle photographer Peter Parker is there covering the event, and
he is soon joined by Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Jameson is quite furious
that Parker is wasting his time at such an event, but his anger is quickly
replaced by fear, as a tidal wave of water comes out of nowhere and covers all
in attendance. Spider-Man swings on in and saves Jameson, and brings him safety
atop a high building where many others are. Everyone soon learns who is behind
such a disaster, when Hydro-Man forms himself out of the water and makes himself
known. Hydro-Man is a villain that was introduced back in "Amazing Spider-Man"
#212, and he has the power to merge with and manipulate water. Hydro-Man turns
his attention to the Senator and threatens to sink the island of Manhattan
within twenty-four hours unless he is given fifty million dollars. Hydro-Man
leaves, and takes the sea of water with him. Senator Arnold brought Hydro-Man's
threat back to the Senate, but nobody knows what to do. Later on, Spider-Man
brings a briefcase to a pier, and he calls out Hydro-Man. Hydro-Man makes
himself visible, after being faked out that the briefcase contains the fifty
million dollars he wanted. After he opens the briefcase, Hydro-Man is surprised
and literally gets a pie in the face. Hydro-Man is now extremely ticked-off, and
now threatens to bring the city underwater after killing Spider-Man. Hydro-Man
chases Spider-Man into a warehouse, where he finds not one but two Spider-Men.
It doesn't take long for Spider-Man to knock out Hydro-Man in the end, and all
is well again.
Art
Very Good.
Best Page: The "Amazing Fantasy" #15 homage page with Spider-Man carrying J.
Jonah Jameson.
Continuity
