Title:
"Back In Black" Part Five |
Character Watch |
|
Story
It's the last issue before "One More Day" begins, and Aunt May is still dying.
After last issue's showdown with the Kingpin, Peter is exhausted both physically
and mentally. The issue begins with Peter and his wife Mary Jane at the hospital
where Aunt May is still holding on. There is not much change in her condition,
as May's apparently built up a resistance to Peter's radiated blood transfusion
that took place earlier in the storyline. After it becomes obvious that there
has to be arrangements made for a funeral, there is a change of scenery to a
police department where some detectives come across the files pertaining to the
shooting of Aunt May. It turns out that there was no police reports or emergency
call from the shooting, and this raises up a big "red flag" for all the
detectives to see. One detective goes pays a visit to see Aunt May, and finds
her "relatives" there. The detective goes to see a nurse first, and plenty of
opinions on what really happened during the shooting are exchanged between the
two. Detective Delint then goes to see Peter and Mary Jane, who are listed as
relatives of "Ms. Reilly" (Aunt May). Delint is very suspicious of everyone
involved in this matter, and he begins to handcuff Mary Jane. This obviously
does not sit well with Peter when he arrives, and he promptly knocks the
Detective out cold and then ties him up in a nice tidy bundle. Peter then makes
his getaway, steals an ambulance, and takes Aunt May to another hospital and
away from the prying eyes of the nurse and detective from the previous hospital.
With all the (rather pointless) felony counts adding up for Peter, and Aunt May
(still) near death, he is near the end of his rope. Next up is the already
controversial "One More Day" that promises to change everything we know about
Spider-Man.

"The Book Of Peter" |
Character Watch Rating - 5.0 |
|
Story
This is the last issue by writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa,
who has had a very nice run in this title, before "One More Day" is the featured
storyline. Aunt May is still on death's door, and Peter is still determined to
do whatever he can to save her. We cut to some flashbacks of Spider-Man's
origin, the death of Gwen Stacy, and more. Back in the present, Peter decides to
let off some steam, wanders off into a alleyway, and begins punching away at
some garbage containers. Out of nowhere, appears a man who looks like Morbius
the living Vampire with bad acne. The man knows who Peter is (but then again, so
does everyone else at this point), and he then "heals" Pete wounds on his hands
(from the punching away). At this point, both Peter and the reader realizes that
this person is "God". "God" invites Peter to grab some food, and the two go out
on a "dinner date". Peter relays to "God" that he would give up anything to save
his Aunt, and begs him to save her. When asked if he would give up being
Spider-Man, Peter states that he would "in a heartbeat". "God" then takes Peter
to a boardwalk on a beach, where he shows him the consequences of a potential
decision to give up being Spider-Man. Peter still does not want his Aunt May to
die, and "God" ends the issue by telling Peter to "Have Faith". Next up: The
final issue and "One More Day".

"Fighting Words" |

Story
Writer Peter David ends his run on "Friendly Neighborhood
Spider-Man" with an issue that many fans have been waiting for since Peter
Parker publicly revealed his identity as Spider-Man to the world: A "one-on-one"
with Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson. Towards the end of the prior
storyline, Jameson got into a heated argument with managing editor Joe "Robbie"
Robertson, then fired his long-time loyal employee. This stand-alone issue
begins with Jameson making a visit to the Robertson household, and he is not
greeted with smiles after the door opens. Jonah requests a private conversation
with his ex-employee, and then the two sit down to talk over a bottle of wine.
Robertson cannot get over Jonah's physical appearance as they talk, as Jameson
sports a bandaged hand, and a couple of black eyes. He begins his story at the
offices of the Daily Bugle, where he gets a message from Spider-Man to meet him
at a specified time and place. Later that day, Jameson arrives at Lieber's Gym,
where Peter is waiting for him. The two talk for quite a long time, with plenty
of disagreements between the two. Peter wants Jonah to drop the lawsuit he has
against him regarding his previously-secret identity as Spider-Man while working
at the Bugle. Jameson give peter a choice between dropping the lawsuit and
re-hiring Robertson, Peter's good friend. Peter's choice may surprise the
reader, and then Peter "orders" Jameson to hit him. Peter takes off his mask and
he's in Jameson's face telling him that he has been jealous all this time. At
first, Jonah does not fall for it, but he eventually loses his cool and lands a
heavy blow to Peter's jaw. Peter insults Jameson, then Jonah adds a couple more
punches to his face. The issue ends on a much more happy note.

"Death Of A Goblin" - Part 1 |
Character Watch Rating - 6.5 |
|
Story
Stuart Immonen begins his very first issue as full-time artist
on "Ultimate Spider-Man", and it's a brand new storyline that promises a "Death
Of A Goblin". The issue opens up on a humorous note however, as Spider-Man gets
his almost annual dose of the Ultimate Shocker. The Shocker is a wannabe
super-villain who has previously been humiliated by Spider-Man on several
occasions in the past, and this time is no different. The surprising part of
their newest encounter is that Spider-Man's ex girlfriend Kitty Pryde gave him a
helping hand. After half-way the comic, we finally get to see a Goblin. Norman
Osborn is being held at the Triskelion SHIELD headquarters, and Mr. Osborn wants
to talk the head of SHIELD: Nick Fury. It appears that Osborn wants to make a
"deal", where he is to receive more "privileges" in return for his scientific
cooperation. One privileges in particular that Norman is interested in is to see
his son Harry, who in the past also turned into a Goblin (the Hobgoblin).
Unfortunately for Norman, is the fact that Nick Fury is not present, and he is
rudely ignored by the SHIELD agents left in charge. The issue ends with a
"Boom!" Not much action at all for this opening issue in this storyline. No real
Goblin, not much Spider-Man. Very Padded.

"Whirlwind Tour" |
Character Watch Rating - 5.5 |
|
Story
Young Peter Parker gets tangled up with Whirlwind this
issue, a villain that was originally introduced as a Giant-Man villain way back
in Tales To Astonish #50. Whirlwind has found his way around the marvel
universe since, and has been in numerous titles such as the Avengers, the
Defenders, Captain America, and many others. Peter begins this
issue by wandering the streets looking for a gift to buy his Aunt May for
Thanksgiving, and he comes up to a jewelry store that just happens to be across
the street from a bank that has just been "hit" by Whirlwind. The Human Top with
mini buzz saws on his wrists, easily steals bundles of cash from the bank like a
kid in a candy store. Peter quickly changes into Spider-Man, and then he goes
after Whirlwind. Their first battle does not go very well for Spider-Man, as the
Whirlwind's cyclone "shield" of high winds protects himself from Spider-Man.
Whirlwind escapes, then Spider-Man looks up the Whirlwind's criminal activity on
the internet, discovering that his father has a residence nearby. It turns out
that Whirlwind's family does not approve of his criminal ways, and his father
does not want any of his son's "ill-gotten gains" (money stolen from the bank).
After Whirlwind's father states that he "has no son", Whirlwind leaves the home,
only to bump into Spider-Man a second time. The second battle with Whirlwind
goes much better for Spider-Man, as he uses a "web puddle" to slow down
Whirlwind's ability to spin. Spider-Man also gets some help when the Whirlwind's
father calls the police on his own son, and when they arrive, they find
Whirlwind all webbed up in a neat little package for them. The issue also ends
on a happy note for Peter and his Aunt.
