Title:
"Back In Black" Part Three |
Character Watch |
|
Story
Spider-Man has been "Back In Black" for a couple of issues now, after his Aunt
May has been shot by an assassin hired by Wilson Fisk - The Kingpin. Last issue,
Peter caught up to the assassin, Jake Martino, but Martino was shot just as he
was about to reveal who paid him. By issue's end, Peter finally discovered that
it was Fisk who hired Martino. We open up the third part of this story, in the
prison holding Fisk, where he finishes his telephone conversation with Peter
from the end of last issue. After Peter ends the phone call, the Kingpin makes
some kind of deal with a prison guard to make him and other night shift guards
to "look the other way". For what? We shall see. Anyway, Peter then proceeds to
torture a criminal named Jim, who was involved (at a lower level) in the
shooting, he uses Jim to alert others that his family is "off limits". Peter
then makes a visit to the hospital to see how his Aunt May is doing, and then
quickly leaves to see the Kingpin. At the Kingpin's prison, all the prison doors
unexpectedly open, leaving the prisoners free to roam. Spider-Man arrives
shortly thereafter, just as Wilson Fisk fixes his bowtie on his more familiar
white Kingpin suit. It takes awhile, but Spider-Man finally comes face to face
with on the last page. Extremely padded storyline. $2.99 comic for 99 cents
worth of story.
Art
Good.
Best Page: The full-page shot of Spider-Man holding up Jim in the sewers.

Title:
"The Last Temptation Of Eddie Brock" Part One |
Character Watch Rating - 7.5 |
|
Story
A highly anticipated two-part story begins here with "The
Last Temptation Of Eddie Brock", as Venom's former host Eddie Brock is dying of
cancer. After a brief re-cap of Brock's life as both a newspaper reporter and as
Venom, we learn that he is currently in the terminal ward of the very same
hospital that Aunt May is being held (see the current Amazing Spider-Man
storyline for the reason why). On death's door, Brock is still being haunted by
Venom, or at least the memories of the symbiote he was once host to. While in
the hospital, we see Brock's reaction to Peter Parker revealing his identity as
Spider-Man to the world. The issue really gets interesting after Brock sees Aunt
May and Mary Jane in their room, and his "haunting" by Venom now increases
greatly. While this issue puts the spotlight on Brock, the middle part does
include a brief interlude of Spider-Man dealing with some common street thugs,
and a meeting with Madame Web. Back at the hospital, Eddie Brock begins to pray,
and "Venom" comes out to play with his mind once again. It becomes quite obvious
that Brock is really losing his mind, as he ponders killing the Parkers, and at
the same time fighting the urge to go through with it. The first part ends with
Brock opening a parcel from Ricky's Variety that he ordered from recently.
Strange but entertaining issue.
Art
Gorgeous.
Best Page: The page with Venom looking over Brock in his hospital room.
Continuity
Police

Spoilers
Spider-Man asks Madame Web to somehow "reach" or
communicate with his Aunt May.
Brock's parcel contains a loose cheap nylon Venom costume that he wears on the
last page.

"Ultimate Knights" - Part 5 |
Character Watch Rating - 9.0 |
|
Story
It's the conclusion of the "Ultimate Knights" storyline, and
we begin by witnessing the murder of Moonknight (dressed up as Ronin), or do we?
As for the "Ultimate Knights", they are fighting amongst themselves, after last
issue's sensing by Daredevil that Iron Fist has been a traitor to the group.
Daredevil begins landing some heavy punches to Iron Fist, until Spider-Man
contains him. After things settle down a bit, Iron Fist tells everyone his side
of the story. Sometime later, Iron Fist makes another visit to see the Kingpin,
in order to distract him, while Daredevil slips inside the building to threaten
the Kingpin's wife. Daredevil threatens to snap her neck, and makes it known
that he wants to kill the Kingpin instead, but Spider-Man arrives just in time
to put a stop to his madness. After a couple of very tense pages, there comes a
meeting of the minds, and Wilson Fisk begins to leave the country. Later when
Fisk is leaving to get on a private jet, a horde of police cars quickly surround
him, and arrest him for attempted murder. Who's murder? That question is
answered below in the spoilers. The issue and storyline ends with the Kingpin in
jail, and a young Peter Parker walks home in the rain. Next issue: New artist
Stuart Immonen begins, after Mark Bagley's very long tenure on the title, plus
the introduction of Ultimate Spot!
Art
Excellent.
Best Page: The last full-page shot of Peter Parker walking home in the
rain.

The Kingpin discovered that Iron Fist has a daughter, and
used it against him.

Story
The Mysterious Miss Arrow is no longer mysterious since
the last couple of issue's revelation that she is the entity known as "The
Other", that was introduced in the quite-long storyline of the same name. Miss
Arrow was introduced a nurse at Midtown High School. This is the very same
school where Peter Parker was employed as a teacher, before he publicly unmasked
himself as Spider-Man. Miss Arrow has recently been stalking another Midtown
High employee: Peter's old friend/ adversary Flash Thompson. Flash has been
seeing long-time supporting cast member Betty Brant, and Miss Arrow has not
reacted to their affections for each other very kindly. We have also recently
learned that Miss Arrow/ The Other needs to reproduce in order to survive, and
Flash has been chosen as her lucky mate. This issue begins with a phone call
from Betty to Peter, alerting him to the fact that Flash is missing. Spider-Man
then swings on over to a nearby church where the Other has Flash all webbed-up
like a cocoon. The Other has been gestating an egg, and when it hatches, it will
produce hundreds of similar-like creatures as The Other with hopes of disposing
of and destroying Spider-Man. The Other also plans on jamming the this large egg
down Flash's throat, in order to save herself. Not a happy moment for Flash. Of
course, Spider-Man shows up just in time, and his anticipated battle with The
Other begins. A welcome little breakaway takes place in the offices of the Daily
Bugle, then it's back to the action where Spider-Man and The Other fight to a
stand-still over several pages, before The Other stabs Spider-Man with her
poisonous wrist stinger. It does not take after till Spider-Man falls, and for
The Other to have a change of plans.
Art
Very Good.

Story
A team of incarcerated super-villains led by Kaine and
consisting of Darkdevil, Earthshaker, Mr. Abnormal and Killerwatt is hired to
guard Specimen 297 - a top secret biological weapon currently in S.H.I.E.L.D.
custody (or so we think). However, as they are transporting it through the city,
an armored car slams into their vehicle and a group of highly trained soldiers
attempts to steal Specimen 297. Fortunately, Mayday Parker is in the area and
since her parents have come to terms with her fighting crime (as of last issue),
Spider-Girl swings in for the save. She battles the soldiers in the sewer. But
during the fight, the sphere containing Specimen 297 is cracked by a stray
bullet, allowing the contents to spill out...and believe me, this won't be good
for our heroine!!! Also, Mary Jane gets a job offer at Midtown High and Mayday's
friend Courtney learns something about her boyfriend, Moose. Next issue: May tackles one of her father's deadliest foes - Carnage!

Bruce

Art
Good as always. Ron Frenz and Sal Buscema are a great veteran duo.
Best Page: Definitely the final page, a full-page shot of the surprise villain.

Spoilers
"Specimen 297" is none other than Spider-Man's old enemy
Carnage! He has been contained in a top-secret laboratory for years, unknown to
the public. But now he's loose and undoubtedly, he'll be gunning for Mayday!

"I--Hate--Spider-Man!" |
Character Watch Rating - 5.5 |

Story
Time for a Spider-Man - Green Goblin stand-alone issue,
and it's another quality tale set in the "Mad-Verse". A great splash-page of the
Green Goblin opens this issue up, with him speaking to the reader that he "hates
Spider-Man", while crushing a copy of a Marvel Adventures Spider-Man
comic in his hands. The issue then proceeds to an abandoned subway station,
where the Green Goblin is attempting to recruit a little gang of underworld
crime members. The Goblin fails to persuade the criminals, due to the fact that
they do not want to deal with Spider-Man. The Goblin is now furious that his
reputation has been ruined by Spider-Man, and is now more than ever determined
to destroy him. The very next page has the Goblin flying out after Spider-Man,
and he lures Spider-Man into a trap, where he finds himself knocked out after an
explosion. Just as the Goblin attempts to unmask Spider-Man, the police arrive,
and he quickly escapes. Spider-Man comes to, and goes home to rest. Peter Parker
is now questioning whether he can be Spider-Man anymore, after falling into the
Goblin's trap. The following week, the Goblin meets again with the very same
crime members from the beginning of the issue. This meeting goes much better for
the Goblin, as the criminals are impressed with the Goblin's last battle with
Spider-Man, and now band with him. A few days later, several explosions take
place in the city, and Spider-Man is nowhere to be seen. The Green Goblin now
appears to be unstoppable with his latest crime spree, and young Peter Parker is
sheltering himself by locking himself in his room. After a little pep-talk by
Aunt May, Peter gets the nerve again to go "out" again. Spider-Man is now back
on the streets again, and with the Green Goblin refusing to lay low, it's only a
matter of time till he is brought down again. The Green Goblin ends up going
back to jail.
Art
Very Good.
