Spider-Man, An amnesiac Black Widow (coming
to), Nick Fury, S.H.I.E.L.D., Boomerang, The Silver Samurai, and a mystery
"boss", all in the last two issues of Marvel Team-Up. It's getting kind of
crowded around this title, and gets a little more crowded when The Master Of
Kung-Fu, Shang-Chi joins in on the fun. Shang-Chi met Spider-Man in another
team-up title way back in
Giant-Size Spider-Man #2, and here they are once again, far from
alone! There are many questions left unanswered from last issue, such as who is
this mysterious boss giving orders, not only tt the known criminals Boomerang
and Silver Samurai, but also members of S.H.I.E.L.D. as well. Lets find out:
Aboard S.H.I.E.L.D.'s aircraft known as the heli-carrier, a hypnotized Clay
Quartermain is side by side with Boomerang, the Silver Samurai, and the
mysterious woman once known as Madame Hydra: Viper, who was last seen in
Captain America #182, where she miraculously survived an explosion. It was
explained that she was helped by a "friend" in a van who has worked with Hydra
in the past. The two went to Japan and fell in love, and she also developed a
master plan to crush the United Sates, by designing and testing a Hypno-Beam.
The first of those it was tested on was members of New York's Underground
S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters. The Silver Samurai was used to steal the Cavourite
Crystal in Marvel Team-Up
#57, but was defeated by a previous team-up of Spider-Man and the Black
Widow. This was but a minor setback for Viper, as she then took over the
S.H.I.E.L.D. heli-carrier. The Crystal was somehow delivered to a television
show, Saturday Night Live, in
Marvel Team-Up #74, and the Samurai successfully took it from John
Belushi. The heli-carrier was soon under the Viper's command, and she has used
this most trusted defensive system of the United States against it's very own
government.
Elsewhere, a thousand feet above the heli-carrier, Spider-Man and the Black
Widow are using gliders that are undetectable by the carrier's scanners to get
closer and eventually inside. Nick Fury, on the other hand, is in his air-car
communicating to a hypnotized Quartermain, and he is cleared for landing on the
heli-carrier. Viper plans to kill him aboard, as to not make any kind of scene
outside the carrier by simply shooting him down. As Fury lands, another is
watching from afar. Just as Fury is about to get attacked by hypnotized
S.H.I.E.L.D. members, the mystery watcher comes out and kicks and punches with
the skill of a master of the martial arts: Shang-Chi. Just as Nick thanks him,
out of nowhere, he receives the brunt of an explosive boomerang from
well...Boomerang! Boomerang is very confident as he approaches Shang-Chi, as he
is unarmed, but he does not need any weapons. Shang-Chi easily deflects a
Razor-Ang with his bracelet, then holds his breath as a gasarang is thrown his
way. Shang-Chi looks like he is about to take care of Boomerang, but one last
explosive boomerang takes Shang-Chi down.
Inside the heli-carrier, in a store room, Spider-Man and the Widow get caught by
a small gang of S.H.I.E.L.D. officers. The Viper wants to see to it, personally,
that the Widow is executed. Boomerang brings in Shang-Chi to make the execution
list a total of three, but to the surprise of everyone aboard, he breaks free
and goes on a rampage attacking several S.H.I.E.L.D. members. It turns out that
Boomerang is none other than Nick Fury himself in Boomerang's costume. Fury was
well enough to help Shang-Chi, when he was thought downed by Boomerang's
explosive boomerang. Fury took down Boomerang as then disguised himself as him,
setting the ambush perfectly. At the point when it looks like the good guys are
easily taking care of the bad guys, Viper escapes with mentioning that the
President's life is at stake, just when then president Carter is about to make a
speech before a joint session of congress.
Just as Spider-Man goes after the Viper when makes her getaway, the Silver
Samurai takes a swing with his energy-blade at him. His first "cut" misses, but
he then connects, sending Spider-Man through the side of the heli-carrier and
seemingly to a two mile death-plunge. We will have to wait to see how this all
turns out in the finale of this excellent four-part Marvel Team-Up with
Spider-Man, the Black Widow, Nick Fury, and Shang-Chi: Master Of Kung-Fu!.
