Marvel Team-Up #82 begins a major
(for MTU anyway!) four part storyline. This title has been traditionally a solo
story run, with the occasional two- parter thrown in from time to time. The
first part has Spider-Man teaming up with the Black Widow, a character he met
way back in
Amazing Spider-Man #86, when the Widow received somewhat of a make-over
for her, since her early days when she introduced in Tales Of Suspense
#52. Lets begin with the first of a gem four-parter by Claremont and Sal
Buscema.
It's early morning in New York City, as a gorgeous red-headed woman is walking,
and her name isn't Mary Jane Watson! She recognizes a picture of Spider-Man from
the Daily Bugle. They were once friends she remembers, and it is apparent that
she is amnesiac. She happens to stroll by a couple of hoodlums, who plan on
having some "fun". Four of them surround her, and she begins to flee, but is
ultimately cornered and slapped by the leader of the small gang. Just as the
leader attempts to grab her pocket book, he is punched into oblivion, sending
him far away. Spider-Man arrives to save the early part of the woman's day, then
he easily takes care of the two of the others. He slips while going after the
last gang member, and is just about to get stabbed, but the mystery woman lands
a karate chop on him, knocking him out. Spider-Man is grateful to the woman,
then he recognizes who she is: The Black Widow! The woman faints after hearing
this, and Spider-Man takes her to safety.
After the woman wakes up, she introduces herself as Nancy Rushman, an Elementary
School Teacher in upstate New York, but she doesnt remember where in New York
she teaches. Something is wacky here! At the same time, some mysterious scanners
begin to target something in Manhattan. Spider-Man now looks in "Nancy's" Bag,
and takes out the costume of Black Widow, and again, she is startled. Spider-Man
suggests that she change into the Widow's costume, as all units "close in" from
the mysterious scanner. Spider-Man recognizes that this woman has the same
initials as the Widow: Natasha Romanoff, and realizes something is amiss. Even
after she changes into the costume, "Nancy" still doesn't believe that she is
the Widow. Then out of nowhere, S.H.I.E.L.D. Strike Force Units come flying into
the building blasting away. Both Spider-Man and "Nancy" are stunned as to why
they are there. Spider-Man saves "Nancy" by taking her out of harms way, but the
Strike Force Units are still on their trail. Spider-Man then breaks out of the
window, and escapes with the Units still after them firing away to kill.
It is obvious that the S.H.I.E.L.D. Units want "Nancy", but why? Spider-Man
manages to get away, but only for a short time, as Spider-Man is struck in the
shoulder (it's ALWAYS in the shoulder!) from one of the Strike Force Units.
After Spider-Man has fallen, one of the Units land and is hell-bent on shooting
"Nancy". Just as she is about to get shot, "Nancy" begins to lash out
desperately defending herself. After she knocks out one of the S.H.I.E.L.D.
Agents, "Nancy" and Spider-Man are on the run again, with another set of Strike
Force Units nearby. Spider-Man tries to take one of the units down using his
webbing, but is quickly overwhelmed by the number of S.H.I.E.L.D. Agents that
transcend onto the scene. Watching from a partially closed door, "Nancy" watches
in horror, as Spider-Man gets pummeled into the ground. It is at this point,
that the Black Widow persona comes out to "play", joining in on the action and
taking care of the agents by herself.
When Spider-Man comes-to, he discovers that "Nancy" is by her wanting to know
who she truly is. Spider-Man's spider-sense goes off, and he recognizes Nick
Fury standing behind him. For no apparent reason, Fury shoots the Nancy Widow
right in the groin, seemingly killing her in cold blood. This, of course does
not go over too well with Spider-Man, and he lunges at Ole' Nick. Guess who also
gets shot? Yep, at issue's end, we have a seemingly dead Black Widow, AND dead
Spider-Man.
Just what the heck is going on here?? We will learn much more next issue, when
the even more characters are added to the fun!
