"A Hitch In Time!" - 20 Pages
|
You knew it wouldn't take long before Thor made an appearance teaming-up with Spider-Man in the still relatively new series Marvel Team-Up. These two haven't exactly had many face to faces and usually when they did, it was when Spider-Man joined forces with the Avengers. Many times Thor is involved in a story, Asgard is usually a part of it. It is Thor's home and has many legendary inhabitants with the most legendary being the God of Thunder himself. Here's a look at the first team-up of Thor and Spider-Man in MTU:
The title gives the reader somewhat of an impression of what the story is about: "A Hitch In Time!". The splash page states that for the entire world, time is running out, while our two heroes battle with many warriors. We then cut to a point in time where Peter Parker is walking down the street and hears a scream of a woman who is being mugged. He quickly comes to her aid and easily defeats the two muggers as the woman quickly runs away. Peter discovers that he has a spectator as Thor is sitting above him on a building. As they talk, the sky begins change appearance and Thor begins to swing his mystic hammer Mjolnir creating a tornado like effect that transports him and Peter to a world that has gone insane. Everything is reversed as the stars look are dark and the night sky is white. Thor assumes that the wheels of time has stopped and some mad tinkerer has doused the light of reality. Sounds funky huh? Anyway, Peter changes into Spider-Man and the two prepare for battle as many green, orange and yellow armored warriors make their way towards them and they do not look happy! Thor is somewhat familiar with the looks of the warriors and then remembers that a vicious troll named Kryllk the Cruel is behind everything. Kryllk then shows his face stating that he wants Thor to remember him when he dies, how nice. As the battle rages on, Kryllk states that it is not earth which is his ultimate goal of conquering, but Asgard.
Kryllk doesn't seem so Cruel at this point, but things do change when he displays the Dark Crystal. The Dark Crystal controls the fate of worlds and dams the stream of time, and he plans on using it to destroy Asgard. Thor has a conniption at this point at which he attempts to assault Kryllk, but Kryllk disappears into thin air as does every warrior. It's just Thor and Spider-Man at this point with the rest of earth in a literal stand-still. In the past, it took the All-Father Odin himself to defeat Kryllk, but it's up to these two now. They go to Avengers Mansion where the Avengers are still and appear in a mirror image. Unable to get any help from the Avengers, Thor plans on using the vast machinery there. With some tinkering, they are able to view on a screen the trail left by the Dark Crystal while it's on its way to Asgard. Thor transports Spider-Man to Asgard as he himself has been exiled from his homeland (See Thor #204) while Thor is on his way to the mystic trail left by the Dark Crystal hoping to find Kryllk. When Spider-Man appears in Asgard he discovers that it in the same condition as Earth with time appearing to be standing still. Thor on the other hand, ends up on a planetoid near Jupiter where he finds Kryllk and his many warriors after following the mystic trail.
Time for a major battle or some major destruction? Not while Kryllk is in a talkative mood! He explains that the Crystal protects all who stand within it's rays and that he found it in a cavern beneath Asgard itself. Kryllk said that it "told" him things no man or god ever dreamed and explained the mysteries of the universe. Kryllk desires to use these mysteries as weapons against the Gods and especially Odin. Back on Asgard, Spider-Man locates some of Kryllk's warriors and defeats them. He then finds who he thinks is Kryllk himself, but he seems very immobile and ignorant of what's going on around him. Spider-Man Then throws a punch into Kryllk's chest and it passes right through him. That's the bad news for Spidey at least, but back to the Planetoid, the real Kryllk is suddenly stricken with a great pain in his chest. Thor attempts to add a blow of his own, but before he can do so, the world around him shakes and Kryllk disappears along with his men and the Dark Crystal. Before things get any stranger, the Watcher pops out of nowhere and begins to explain that the Dark Crystal is his and that Kryllk stole it to freeze the space time continuum thereby creating an echo. He intended to destroy Asgard but also froze Earth as Kryllk feared that the heroes might somehow protect the threatened Asgardians. Only thing is, he missed Spider-Man and Thor. Was it luck, as Spider-Man put it, that they were the only two who were not affected and frozen in time? Or was it something more? Only the powerful Watcher knows!
A somewhat slow read with a very good ending. Uninteresting villain, but great collaboration between Spider-Man and Thor. Spider-Man and Thor go on team-up again a number of times in this title, the next being in Marvel Team-Up #70 where they take on the Living Monolith in a much better read. Kryllk, on the other hand, has yet to make another appearance.
